Fulang-Chang and I 1937<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00ab\u00a0Fulang-Chang and I depicts Kahlo with one of her pet monkeys, interpreted by many as surrogates for the children she and Diego Rivera were unable to conceive. The painting was included in the first major exhibition of her work, held at Julien Levy Gallery in New York in 1938. In the essay that accompanied the show, the Surrealist leader Andr\u00e9 Breton described Kahlo&rsquo;s work as \u00ab\u00a0a ribbon around a bomb\u00a0\u00bb and hailed her as a self-created Surrealist painter. Although she appreciated his enthusiasm for her work, Kahlo did not agree with his assessment: \u00ab\u00a0They thought I was a Surrealist but I wasn&rsquo;t,\u00a0\u00bb she said. \u00ab\u00a0I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality\u00a0\u00bb. La ausencia en ella de toda constricci\u00f3n le deja la perspectiva de muchas vidas vividas a la vez&#8230;El juicio a la actitud realista ha de hacerse despu\u00e9s del juicio a la actitud materialista&#8230;\u00a0\u00bb Andr\u00e9 Breton<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u00abSi vous gardez un peu de clart\u00e9, vous ne pouvez pas arr\u00eater de regarder son enfance, qui, peu importe la fa\u00e7on dont cela a \u00e9t\u00e9 difficile et tortur\u00e9e par leurs professeurs, elle ne vous para\u00eetra pas moins riche en charmes.
